Hot Plate

A hot plate is a portable electric device used in cooking and commonly, in laboratory experiments. It has a flat surface and designed to hold flat-bottom containers such as skillets, pans, beakers, etc. Hot plates are generally inexpensive and a great alternative for gas burners and typical stovetop. However, there are models today that are made with additional features, including the magnetic stirrer which allows the liquid to stir automatically, while some are made for induction cooking. These sophisticated models are however more expensive than basic models.

Using a hot plate is quite simple. Just plugged the electric cord and the heat will start to coil within the plate. Most of the hot plates contain an adjustment setting just like to a standard stovetop, allowing you to control the heat according to the desired temperature.
Hot plates can be very useful in kitchen when the standard stovetop is full and there’s a need for additional stove for food preparation. Because they are so portable and can be placed in a table top, they provide great convenience and comfort to the user. They can also be kept easily when you have already finished preparing. However, you must have to be careful when using the device. Be sure to not place them in an area where children can easily access them. Sometimes, the edge or sides of the stove may accumulate heat, and can burn your kids once they touched them. Also, never place it to an area that is closed to combustible materials.
The plate where the containers are placed is typically made from heavy metal such as cast-iron, while the rest of the device can either be made from plastic or other metals like steel. Although mostly used in laboratory as an alternative for Bunsen burners and other heat source for heating solvents used for experiments and tests, a hot plate is also an alternative source of heat commonly found in apartments and dormitories. Because hot plates are small and portable, many students and people who live alone used them as replacements for large stoves for preparing some snacks and reheating certain meals.
Depending on the design and features, you can find hot plates for as low as $15, perfect if you only have small budget but needs a device for heating. Some models can be purchased in thousands of dollars. There are also items that come in a single burner, while there are some that are equipped with two burners. Depending on your needs and preferences, you can either choose a single or double burner for preparing foods.
When using the heating device, be sure to not leave it unattended, as it can cause fire when it’s overheated. Be sure also to keep a fire extinguisher close to the area where you cook to immediately kill fire in case. But just like with other appliances, proper care will avoid hazard and accidents. Overall, the use of hot plate is an advantage when there’s a need for alternative heat source in any house, apartment or dormitory.
